She is the daughter of Fred and Ruth Midler.Ruth was a common housewife and a seamstress and her husband painted houses. Both of her parents were first situated in New Jersey and moved to Hawaii before she was born. Her family was of Jewish Ethnicity and lived in a neighborhood where mostly Asian families resided. Afterwards Bette studied in Radford High School. When she was in her senior year she was voted the most talkative and the most dramatic. She learned acting at the University of Hawaii. She got to test her acting skills when she did a small role as a sea sick passenger in the movie Hawaii in 1966 and made some money while doing it. Using the money she had made acting as an extra she moved to New York City. There she landed her first major role in 1965.Furthermore from 1966 to 1969 she played a role in Fiddler on The Roof featuring on Broadway.

During the year 1970 she sang at a gay bathhouse named Continental Baths where she made good friends with Barry Manilow who later went on to produce her first album in 1973 named The Divine Miss M.She won four Grammy awards in 1973 considering the success and beautiful music that she had made. She later on went to perform at different functions such as The Live Aid event in 1985 and numerous others which included some for charity showing how gracious and giving Bette was. Furthermore she won an Emmy award in the year 1992.
