What is Don Carlos? Well Don Carlos is a five-act Grand Opera that has been composed by Giuseppe Verdi adapted from a French language libretto that has in turn been composed jointly by Camille du Locle and Joseph Mry. It has been based on the dramatic play titled the “Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien” which roughly translated means "Don Carlos, Infant of Spain". It has been done by Friedrich Schiller. The main story of the opera revolves around the conflicts that occurred in the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias who lived from the year 1545-1568.he was engaged to be married but his fianc named Elisabeth of Valois gets married to his father instead who is named as Philip II of Spain. This is done so as to secure the peace treaty that is the source of ending the Italian War that commenced in the year 1551 and ended eight years later in the year 1559. This war took place between the Houses of Habsburg and Valois. This opera made its debut at the venue of the Thtre Imprial de l’Opra on the 11th of March in the year 1867.
Over the span of the next two decades, several cuts and additions were later made to the original which resulted in several of its versions being made available to not only the directors but also the conductors. To date there is no other Verdi opera that exists at present in so many different versions. When it was at its original full-length it included both the ballet and the cuts that had been made prior to the earlier performances. Plus it also included around four hours of music, which yet again is Verdi's longest opera.
The performances that were given by the opera of the Don Carlos… often dubbed as the Don Carlo, during the beginning of he twentieth century used to be much rare. It was only after the Second World War era that it began to give/make regular performances. Some of its regular performances were in the four-act 1883 'Milanese' version. Subsequent to the notable staging of the 1886 five-act Italian version that was conducted during the late fifties at the venue of the Royal Opera House, by the director named Luchino Visconti, this Italian version has been performed at several places al across and has also been recorded by the likes of Georg Solti and Carlo Maria Giulini.
Last but not the least the staging and the recordings of the original opera that was a five-act French version, became increasingly popular and frequent. Several performances have been conducted at the venue of the Teatro alla Scala in the year 1970. These performances feature actors like Plcido Domingo with Katia Ricciarelli. The venue was the Thtre du Chtelet in the year 1996, where Roberto Alagna played the lead role of Don Carlos.
