Born in 22ndJuly, in the year 1973, Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter. He has recorded 6 albums of innovative music, EPs, and tracks on collections and film soundtracks. He was born in Rhinebeck, to folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright. His parents separated when he was 3 years old, and then lived with his mother in Montreal, Canada for most of his childhood. Wainwright is both a United States and Canadian national.
He attended high school at the Millbrook School in New York which would later impress his song "Millbrook", and then briefly learned piano at Concordia and McGill Universities in the Montral. He started playing the piano at age of 6, and started touring at the age of 13 with "The McGarrigle Sisters and Family", a folk group consisting of Rufus, his sister Martha, his mother Kate, and aunt Anna. His song "I'm a-Runnin'", which he performed in the film Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller at the age of 14, earned him a selection for a year 1989 Genie Award for Best Original Song.
He was nominated for the year 1990 Juno Award for the Most talented Male Vocalist of the Year. Wainwright came out as gay while a teenager. In 1999, he told Rolling Stone that his father recognized his homosexuality early on.
