Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the Arizona Diamondbacks are a professional baseball team. In Major League Baseball's National League they play in the West Division. From the year 1998 to the present, they have played in Chase Field (formerly Bank One Ballpark). Arizona has one World Series title, in the year 2001, achieving the title of becoming one of the fastest teams in the majors to win a championship, doing it in only 3 years since their opening out in the year 1998.
There was a rich tradition of baseball in Arizona long before the discussion of bringing a big-league team even started. The state has been a frequent spring training site since the year 1946. With the large numbers of people moving to the state from the Midwest, the Northeast, as well as from California, many teams (most especially the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers) usually had large followings in Arizona.
Elyse Doherty and Martin Stone mounted the first serious attempt to land an expansion team for the Phoenix area, owner of the Phoenix Firebirds, the city's single-A minor league baseball team and an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. In the late 1980s Stonewent to the St. Louis (football) Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill about sharing a 70,000 seat domed stadium in Phoenix.
