The Dallas Mavericks are also known as the Mavs. They are a professional basketball team based in Dallas, Texas, USA. Mavericks are members of the Southwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA), founded in the year 1980. The Mavericks have won two division titles in the year 1987 and 2007 including one conference championship in the year 2006. According to a 2008 Forbes Magazine report, Dallas Mavericks are the seventh most valuable basketball franchise in the United States of America, they are valued at approximately $466 million; the franchise is surpassed in value only by the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Chicago Bulls, the Detroit Pistons, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Houston Rockets.
In the year 1979, famous businessman Don Carter and his partner Norm Sonju requested the right to bring an NBA franchise to Dallas, Texas. As the last professional basketball team in Dallas had been the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association, which moved to San Antonio in the year 1973 and became the San Antonio Spurs.
At the 1980 NBA All-Star Game, league owners decided to admit the new team, with the team's name coming from the 1957-1962 TV western Maverick. James Garner, who played the namesake character in the show, was a member of the ownership group.
