Based in Seattle, Washington, the Seattle Mariners are an American professional baseball team. Enfranchised in the year 1977, the Seattle Mariners are a member of the Major League Baseball's American League, Western Division. The Mariners' home ballpark has been Safeco Field since July 1999. The "Mariners" name originated from the distinction of marine culture in the city of Seattle. Seattle Mariners are as nicknamed "the M's", a title featured in their initial logo from year 1977 to 1992. The current team colors are navy blue, metallic silver, and teal. The mascot of Seattle Mariners is the Mariner Moose. The association did not field a winning team until the year 1991, and any real success escaped them until 1995 when Seattle Mariners won their first division championship and defeated the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. The Mariners share the record for most wins in a single season with 116, which they achieved in the year 2001. In spite of their successes winning their first division title in year 1995, they have never won an AL Championship, and remained one of three franchises who never played in a World Series.
Based in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are a Major League Baseball franchise. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are a member of the Eastern Division of MLB's American League. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays played their first game on March 31, 1998 against the Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field facing a crowd of 45,369. The first pitch was thrown by Wilson Alvarez and Wade Boggs hit the first home run in team history that day, and though the Devil Rays lost their opening game by 11–6, they actually got off to a good start.
In November 2007, Stuart Sternberg who was the majority owner made major changes to his franchise's image, changing the club's name to the "Tampa Bay Rays", which he described as "a beacon that radiates right through Tampa Bay and across the entire state of Florida.
