Ever heard of the popular “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee?” it is a very popular musical comedy. The music has been composed by and the lyrics have been written by the same person, which is William Finn. The author for the book of the same name is Rachel Sheinkin. The story of this show revolves around a fictional character, which is that of a spelling bee. This character is shown having been set up in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. There in the school there are half a dozen quirky yet adolescents kids who go on to compete in the Bee. It is run by three equally-quirky grown-ups who also compete in the bee. At the end all the spellers find out that at times winning is not all that matters.

In the year 2005 the Broadway production of the Bee had made its debut premiere. Its director was James Lapine. This production not only earned very good reviews at the box-office but also received tremendous success at the box office as well. It was nominated for half a dozen Tony Awards. Out of these six it managed to win two of these prestigious awards which included the award for the Best Book. This show has also spawned numerous other productions that had been performed in the United States. Apart from other things one very unusual aspect of this show had been that almost three or four real audience members had been invited on the stage in order for a competition not only amongst the six cast members but amongst the real audience members and the six young characters in the spelling bee.

In the prestigious Tony Awards that had been held in the year 2005, the same year that the former Presidential candidate named Al Sharpton had competed. One of the other aspects of this show is that several ridiculous examples are used when the respective words are included and then arranged within a sentence. Say for instance, the words "palaestra" and "Euripides are used as 'What happens at the palaestra stays at the palaestra.'" Other than that there are several shows, (in which only audiences that are above sixteen years of age) are invited for "Parent-Teacher Conferences." These are also called as "adult night at the Bee." Several of these performances are also peppered with not only sexual references but also profanity that is inspired by R-libs that are made whilst the rehearsals.

Not only that but “Spelling Bee” in addition to The Drowsy Chaperone, Xanadu and several others are a part of the Broadway trends that are presented as musicals that are presented without any interruption at the intermission. They include a relatively small cast that has a run time of less than a couple of hours. The cast album had been released on the 31st of May in the year 2005.
