By a book with Ken Ludwig, Crazy for You is a musical theatre, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and music by George Gershwin. As “The New Gershwin Musical Comedy”, it is mainly based on the songwriting team’s 1930 construction, Girl Crazy, but interpolates songs from several other productions also. Crazy for You won the year 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical theatre.
The Broadway production was directed by the Mike Ockrent and was choreographed by the Susan Stroman. After 10 shows, it opened at the Shubert Theatre on 19thFebruary, the year 1992 and ran for 1,622 performances. The cast included Jodi Benson (Polly), Harry Groener as Bobby Child, Bruce Adler as Bela Zangler, John Hillner (Lank Hawkins), Michele Pawk (Irene Roth), Jane Connell (Mother), Beth Leavel as Tess (Leavel also understudied Benson), Ronn Carroll (Everett Baker), and Stephen Temperley and Amelia White ( Eugene and Patricia Fodo).
The Manhattan Rhythm Kings played the cowboys Mingo. The shot was fired at the Shubert Theater, where a hilariously pleasurable show called Crazy for You uncorked the American musical’s classic blend of music, dancing and showmanship with a freshness and confidence rarely seen during the Cats decade ‘Crazy for You’ scrapes away ten years of cabaret and ballet and variety-show interpretations to retrieve the Gershwins’ standards, in all their superb youth, for the energy of the stage.”
