Jubilee…! A beautiful theater. The Jubilee Theatre can be called as a theatre that has been listed in a grade two building. It made its debut in the year 1899 at the venue of the St Nicholas Hospital that is located in Gosforth and Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Hence it is evident that this particular theatre is over a century old. It is made in the old Victorian style and has a very beautiful arch that has been decorated with the Royal Doulton tiles that have been designed by W.J. Neatby. Initially it was built for its usage by the staff and the patients of the Hospital. In the beginning at the time of inception this particular theatre used to have a sprung dance floor that had been made from not only maple nut also a full sized orchestra pit. These were used both for the shows and for the dances. At present the orchestra pit has stopped being used. Whereas if desired it can still be used after being included at the front of the stage. This is owing to the fact that the stage has been recently extended over to an area that covers the orchestra pit.

The reason behind this extension was that, so the movies can also be shown at the theatre that is in the projection room. This was added to the backside of the hospital building around the early twenties and housed at least a couple of movie projectors. To date they remain as they were back then but they are not operated and are hence not in use in the current times. In fact in addition to the projection room there was also a very wide cinema screen that was used for lowering in front of the proscenium. There are a couple of doors that lead into the theatre from the location of the main corridors. The gents and the females who were patients at the hospital were continuously separated fro one another. They could not enter each others sections. The male patients would enter the door that is towards the left, whereas the women entered through the right door. The rules were stern and strict and dictated that the men needed to stay on the left side of the auditorium and the women on the right side. The only time when they could be together was when there was some type of dancing function.

In fact towards the side of the men there is also a door that leads to the corridor and that had been previously used as the 'Gentlemen's Smoking Promenade' but at present is being used as a fire corridor instead.

At present it is being mainly used by two groups. The first is the “First Act Theatre” that is a youth theatre company and had been extended an invitation by the hospital Trust for the resident theatre company in the early nineties. The second one is the Juniper Productions that is a drama group for the sufferers of the Mental Health Difficulties.
