Rigoletto is basically an opera that is in three acts that have been composed by the talented Giuseppe Verdi. The Italian libretto had been originally authored by Francesco Maria Piave that had been initially been an adaptation of the play named “Le roi s'amuse” and that had been by Victor Hugo. The very first premiere had been given at the venue of the La Fenice that is located in the Venice. The date of the debut premiere had been the 11th of March in the year 1851. Further it is also considered by several audience and the critics alike as being the first of the operatic masterpieces of the career of Verdi, ranging from the middle to the late career.
In regards to being a staple of the standard operatic repertoire this particular opera also appeared as the ninth number opera on a list that comprises almost twenty of the most-performed operas of all times in the region of the North America. Further Verdi had also been commissioned for authoring a new opera that had been by the theatre named La Fenice that is located in Venice in the year 1850. This was when he had already been a much recognized and a well known composer and he had a certain amount of freedom in making a choice amongst the work that came his way. After that he had asked Piave (In joint conjunction with whom he had already created masterpieces such as Ernani, I due Foscari, Macbeth and Stiffelio) for the examination of the play Kean by Alexandre Dumas, pre. But it was felt by him that he needed a much more energetic subject for working on.
This was when he stumbled upon Victor Hugo's Le roi s'amuse and he later explained it as being both powerful and the most important creation of the theatre in all countries. Although the subject of this opera had been much controversial indeed, and Hugo himself had experienced much trouble with the censorship in the country of France, still he was not deterred. Then at the start of the summer of the year 1850, there were some rumors regarding the Austrian censorship that it was going to forbid this particular production. They had given the reason that they believed that the work of Hugo was basically on the verge of the lese majeste, and tat they could not have allowed such a scandalous work to be given permission for performance in Venice.
When the premire finally took place Verdi had given the role of “Rigoletto” to the much talented “Felice Varesi”, and the role of the Duke to the then young Raffaele Mirate. Teresina Brambilla landed the role of Gilda although originally Verdi had preferred Teresa De Giuli Borsi to her. Teresina Brambilla had been a much recognized name and came from a popular family of singers and musicians, and Teresa Brambilla, who was the better half of Amilcare Ponchielli, was her niece.
