Primus is an American rock band consisting of singer and bassist Les Claypool, guitarist called Larry "Ler" LaLonde, and drummer Jay Lane. The variety of their sound has let Primus to get a modest segment of fans from several different rock sub-genres. They are distinguished by their irreverent thinking to music. Primus introduced their records on Claypools Prawn Song Records label which is a parody of Led Zeppelins Swan Song label. Primus started as Primate in El Sobrante, California in between the mid-1980s with singer and bassist called Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth.
Claypool rounded out the band with a drum machine which they called Perm Parker. The band would go all the way through several drummers throughout their initial history, finally settling on the Jay Lane. When another band called "Primate" threatened legitimate action, the group declared to alter their name. They settled on the name "Primus”. Primus is a Latin which means "chief" or "first". Later than rising to local music scene stardom with their brand of funk metal fusion, Huth and Lane left in the year 1989 to start other endeavors. Claypool then appointed the previous Blind Illusion band mate and one time Joe Satriani student Larry "Ler" LaLonde, and electric drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander.
