The New England Patriots, who are commonly known as the "Pats", are a professional American football team and are based in the Greater Boston area, playing their home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts. The New England Patriots belongs to the East Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL. The team renamed itself from the original Boston Patriots after they relocated to Foxborough in the year 1971, although Foxborough is a suburb of Boston, 22 miles (35 km) away.
Being an original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in the year 1970, which was the result of the merger of those leagues. The team (New England Patriots) advanced to the playoffs four times before appearing in Super Bowl XX in January of the year 1986, but lost to the Chicago Bears. The team also appeared in Super Bowl XXXI in January the year 1997, again losing to the Green Bay Packers.
Between the year 2001 and 2005, the team became the second best team in NFL history right after the Dallas Cowboys, to win Super Bowls in four years (Super Bowl XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX), and the eighth team to win successive Super Bowls.
It's a pretty good time to be a New England Patriots season-ticket holder who doesn't own a television. Admittedly not a fan of the New England Patriots, I tried to be as objective as possible, with the end goal being a list that captured the NFL landscape as accurately as possible. The Jets are currently in a three-way tie for first place with the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins, but wins over both teams give the Jets the clear upper hand in the division.
