This book has been penned by the author James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante. The lyricist for this musical is Edward Kleban, and the composition is by Marvin Hamlisch.After its debut in the United States it was a huge success and was much loved by the critics as well. It bagged a dozen Tony Award nominations and managed to win nine of them. It made more than six thousand appearances and to date is the longest running Broadway production in the history. It has been immensely successful amongst both he audience and the critics alike. The main idea behind this story has been derived from the concept of the gypsy dancers. With more than a dozen cast members, its setting has been made on the Broadway theatre. It depicts the personalities of both the cast members and the choreographers.

It also managed to bag the award for the Best Musical in the same Year that was 1976. Almost nine years later a film was made as an adaptation.
In the nineties the original crew that acted in the play included Baayork Lee and Thommie Walsh in addition to Robert Viagas. The Broadway’s revival was initiated in the minth of October in the year of 2006 in the city of San Francisco. Bob was the director and the honors of choreography were done by Connie Wong. The night that the show made a debut included the opening cat of Ken Alan, Brad Anderson, Michael Berresse, Natalie Cortez, Charlotte dAmboise and , Mara Davi to name a few. Some of the other actors were Michael Paternostro, Alisan Porter, Jeffrey Schecter, Yuka Takara, Jason Tam, Chryssie Whitehead, and Tony Yazbeck. Currently a touring production is giving performances all over the United States. This tour began in May of this year and is still giving performances. This touring production includes Michael Gruber as Zach and Nikki Snelson as Cassie.
